Provincetown, 1940: Tennessee Williams (shirtless) with friends. Courtesy of Joe HazanThe Tennessee Williams festival is a major initiative produced by Glasgay! festival, Scotland. Brought to you in association with the British Film Institute London, Tron and Arches Theatres, Glasgow Film Theatre and Edinburgh Filmhouse. Celebrating the life and work of the late, great American author, Tennessee Williams, on the 25th anniversary of his death.

The festival features a uniquely curated programme of classic revivals, UK premieres and new writing. Produced by Steven Thomson, Glasgay festival producer, the programme examines the lives, loves and proclivities of Tennessee, his world, his family influences and his eventual downfall.

Tennessee Williams died alone in a hotel room in New York in 1983. As an out-gay author since the early 1970's he always found it hard to gain society's acceptance despite his huge hits on stage and screen. This festival reclaims Tennessee as a queer hero and offers the audience a unique journey through all the great themes of life - birth, death, love, marriage, pain, sorrow and loss.

It's also a programme celebrating the greats of the 20th Century with the film programme alone featuring such great names as Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Marlon Brando, Jane Fonda, Paul Newman, Natalie Wood, Robert Redford amongst many many others.

The theatre programme offers a unique opportunity to see early classics such as the Tron Theatre's SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER, and premieres of lesser known works such as THE PARADE; AND TELL SAD STORIES OF THE DEATH OF QUEENS; THE CHALK WHITE SUBSTANCE; THE MUNICIPAL ABATTOIR.

See the movies in London or travel to Scotland for a full festival experience. This is the only UK event of its kind and a once in a lifetime chance to enjoy the work of one of the greatest authors of the 20th Century.
